June Robb

June Craig Robb, a native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, grew up in a community with ladies who enjoyed needlecrafts. Consequently, her love of crafting and fabrics developed very early. June cut and stitched her first skirt and shawl from crepe paper for a 3rd grade festival. As a child, she enjoyed sitting with her mother on a neighbors porch and observing them create beautiful embroidered items. She proudly remembers embroidering a set of dishtowels, one for each day of the week. Before long, she learned to crochet table scarves. June was introduced to fabric arts by an aunt who taught her to tie-dye fabric.

June has always been interested in quilting; however, she considered that it was too time consuming. Her grandmother belonged to a quilting bee, and a playmate’s grandmother was a quilter who used scraps provided by the neighborhood seamstress. She also observed the ladies at her church construct a quilted robe, which consisted of hundreds of appliquéd patches. June finally took on the challenge of quilting when she retired.

As a contemporary quilter, she uses a variety of techniques on the quilts she designs. One of her favorite techniques is foundation piecing using both paper and muslin. Having an affinity with bold and vivid colors, she includes orange in most of her quilts and wearable art.

June is a founding member of the 54-40 African American Quilting Guild. She is featured in Roland L. Freeman’s Book, “A Communication of Spirits, African-American Quilters, Preservers, and Their Stories.” She also exhibited with Freeman’s traveling exhibit, “More Than Just Something to Keep You Warm,” at Hampton University Museum.

My quilts will be shown later..
