Robt. Hewitt

Robert S. Hewitt, Jr. - A native of Norfolk, Virginia, residing in Virginia Beach, Virginia, began quilting in 2000 as a New Year’s (or New Millennium) Resolution. Prior to this time, he has always appreciated quilts for their multiple patterns and fabrics. This interest became a burning passion when he attended Roland L. Freeman’s A Communion of the Spirits quilting exhibit in October 1999 at the Hampton University Museum. So thought-provoking were his talk and slideshow of African-American Quilters, Preservers and Their Stories that Robert was drawn into further conversation with Mr. Freeman, who encouraged him to seek out seasoned quilter Patricia W. Johnson across the gallery. Immediately ensued not only a working relationship but also a friendship. Under her wings, Robert has benefited from hands-on teaching. At present, Robert machine-pieces with an attention on decorative wall hangings and wearable one-of-a-kind pieces. One day he hopes to accomplish a bed-size quilt and organize a male quilting guild. Robert is the first male quilter to join the 54-40 African-American Quilters Guild of Virginia; however, there are honorary male members. Robert had no prior knowledge or sewing skill; his machine was a surprise gift. Interestingly enough his Grandpa Leo, who (predeceased Robert’s birth) was a tailor, and his late Aunt Carrie was a seamstress in her own right. Robert also remembers upholstering barrel-back chairs with his father, Robert Sr., and observing his mother Irene’s meticulous darning. Obviously, the “threads” run deep!
