Samella Burse

Samella Burse- Samella Butler Burse is a native of Chicago , Illinois . She grew up in a very poor area in which the concept of it takes a village to raise a child was implemented. Her maternal grandmother lived with her and taught her how to “tat”. Her father taught her how to thread a needle and to sew buttons on clothing at a very young age.
After marrying and relocating to Massachusetts , She noticed that the local high school offered adult enrichment classes for the residents. Quilting was so popular in this town it was very difficult to enroll in a quilting class. Having a strong will and determination she patiently waited until she found a space in a beginner’s quilting class at the local fabric store.
Her first quilt was a pattern called  “Trip Around the World”. It was very difficult to envision the end product. The most positive aspect of  quilting for her was the great therapeutic affect it had on her health. Quilting provided an opportunity  to be very creative especially for someone who thought she did not have any artistic skills. It is truly amazing how a few pieces of fabric can be turned into a breath taking piece of art.  It is a skill and an art that she greatly treasures.
