Maxine Banks
Maxine has been a member of the 54-40 African-American Quilters Guild of
Virginia for
over three years; she has been quilting for four years. Maxine began sewing in
her high
school home economics classes and turned her new found skill toward sewing
children’s clothing. Her ability to sew and childhood memories of watching her
mother put together fabrics in such beautiful details sparked a personal
interest in quilting. To learn traditional quilting techniques, as well as
non-traditional ones, she has taken several quilting classes.
Initially, Maxine focused on making special interest quilts inspired by her
grandchildren. As her skills and confidence increased, she expanded her
projects to include wall hangings, a memory quilt, and adult quilts as family
heirlooms. Her most time consuming quilt has been a double wedding ring quilt.
She has also derived great pleasure from making a personally designed African
quilt. She is currently working on a scrap quilt, as well as a sweatshirt
jacket.
